What is vibration analysis?

Every operating machine produces vibration. Measuring its amplitude and frequency, then comparing results with the machine’s operating conditions and previous readings, can help identify changes worth investigating. A focused vibration analysis may support troubleshooting of a specific concern or periodic assessment of a critical asset.

Patterns in vibration data may be associated with imbalance, misalignment, bearing wear, looseness or gear-related faults. They are clues, not a diagnosis on their own: machine speed, load, configuration and maintenance history all matter when interpreting results.

Equipment and issues to discuss

Rotating assets

AC and DC motors, pumps, fans, blowers and compressors.

Drive trains

Gearboxes, bearing housings and coupled machinery.

Typical concerns

Unusual noise, increasing vibration, recurring component wear or a change in operating behaviour.

How to prepare for an assessment

The most helpful starting point is the problem you need to solve. Share the equipment type and model, operating speed and load, symptoms, maintenance history and any previous vibration readings. Those details help define the measurement approach and give context to the findings. For a new programme, identify the assets whose unplanned downtime would have the greatest impact.

Vibration analysis can inform inspection priorities and maintenance planning, but it does not guarantee that every fault will be detected or downtime eliminated.
